Traffic Flow Monitoring, Darrington to Dishforth
Project Description
SCD worked alongside RMS to deliver the mission-critical network infrastructure connecting all the induction loops and data collection stations for traffic flow monitoring. SCD provided new ducting and optical fibre networking to create this private data network.
RMS is the operator responsible for ensuring traffic flow rates are maintained throughout the A1 and A1M motorway between Darrington and Dishforth. Their funding, from the Highways Agency, is largely dependent on exceeding flow targets.
Flow data is automatically collected from under-road induction loops located every 500m along the 60km route.
In addition to the induction loops CCTV cameras, at 1km intervals, are used to provide visual inspection of traffic volumes and the nature of any problems that occur.
SCD has installed two temporary radio-based interrupters in the network. These provide a bypass to the fixed infrastructure where other engineering works put this connection at risk. One pair is operating to bypass the A1M Wetherby upgrade works.
Following the commissioning of the optical fibre transmission network SCD now maintains the infrastructure supporting the 6-year rolling programme of preventative maintenance. This includes visual inspection, regular servicing and fault rectification and also covers the street lighting and highway furniture.
