Bradwell Nuclear Power Station

Project Description

SCD won a 12 month contract to install 14 kilometres of power cabling at Bradwell Nuclear Power Station. Both high voltage and low voltage cabling plus and communication cables of various sizes had to be installed to enable the station to progress with decommissioning.

Bradwell stands on a 30 hectare site, one and a half miles from the Essex coastline. Its Magnox reactor was one of the first generation nuclear power stations built in the UK.

From first producing electricity in 1962. Bradwell stopped producing in 2002 and began its decommissioning process.

The work consisted of a variety of civils work throughout the power station. This included the construction of concrete bases for sub stations and construction of both normal sections of duct banks and the construction of specialist duct banks encased in concrete.

Cables were installed within open trenches on site and through duct banks and also installed onto containment constructed at high level on buildings and over the roofs of buildings.
