“The Big Dig” Project, Sheffield

Project Description

SCD undertook a turnkey project for Sheffield Hallam University that included the design, planning, Section 50 licensing, supply of materials, civil engineering, optical fibre cable installation, termination, test and commissioning.

Sheffield Hallam University is one of the UK's most progressive and innovative universities.

Its facilities are state-of-the-art and they have invested heavily in new technology to ensure that their technological capability matches the cutting-edge approach of their teaching.

Located in both the heart of Sheffield and its leafy suburbs, the University needed to provide high-speed, future-proof data connectivity between its campuses. The resulting project became known as the “Big Dig”.

Sheffield Hallam University saw the benefits of “Dark Fibre” when the innovative “Big Dig” was sanctioned by the Vice Chancellor.

This involved a 4.1km civil dig across Sheffield city centre linking the City Campus to the Collegiate Campus to the Psalter Lane Campus.

SCD undertook a turnkey project that included the design, planning, Section 50 licensing, supply of materials, civil engineering, optical fibre cable installation, termination, test and commissioning. The professional approach adopted by SCD combined with our investment in service and quality has resulted in being accredited by the University as an Approved Partner.
